This month we honor Peter Newton, of Hilliker Corporation, our 2008 CIE Chairman. Peter came involved with CIE in 2004 when he joined the Technology Committee. Here Peter reflects on his involvement with the CIE.

"The CIE is a private corporation owned by the commercial Realtors of St. Louis Association of REALTORS.  It is, quite literally, your corporation, and its leadership is made up of your colleagues.  The goal of CIE is simple: Create and perpetuate a “cutting edge” system that is an easy to use database of commercial real estate information that allows members instant access to the data in a manner that maximizes your productivity and helps you generate more sales and/or /leases. 

As CIE Chairman in 2008 I took over the reins from Gerry Prinster.  Gerry oversaw the transition to the CDX system we are currently using.  Essentially he had the hard job, he did all the hard work, and then I slid in when the new system was in place, and my job was to see that the CIE Board of Directors busied itself with getting a few bugs out, and implementing some of the features and functions that were still being programmed but yet to be implemented. 

Being the Chairperson of the CIE is a very easy job.  You preside over a board made up of the leaders of our industry who are making the major course changes and guiding the company.  The discussions can be lively, but the Directors are making decisions based on the real world and how we can maximize the use of our data.  When everyone is on the same page, with the same goals the organization and meetings run like a Swiss watch.  While some are academics as well, we don’t deal in theory.  The Directors make decisions with the focus on making you more money by maximizing and streamlining access to our own data.      

I see being the Chairman of CIE, or the leader of any organization for that matter, as being the person who makes sure that everyone keeps their eyes on the ball and never loose sight of what our mission is.  When you run a meeting with people who are out there doing it everyday this is not a tall order.  The people who serve us on this board are the best. 

You have the best staff working for you and implementing those decisions as well.  They are experts in both the technology and the business of real estate.  They were good when they started, but as this point you will not find people who are more experienced with the products, new innovations, and an understanding of where the technology is going so that we get there first and can translate it into the service that will help the members achieve their goals.  They deserve our constant thanks for the work they do.   

The work of your CIE is never done, because the technology is constantly evolving, and innovations in software occur at a dizzying pace.  When I first started on the Technology Committee I was informed that the CIE would need to innovate and go through the process of deciding on a new system every few years.  We stay on the cutting edge because of the tireless work of the Directors and the staff. 

I learned a tremendous amount from my fellow board members and from our world class staff during my tenure.  It was both professionally and personally enriching.  We are in an industry where cooperation with competitor/colleagues is essential, and I know of no better place where we all come together and work for the common good of our industry than the CIE.  Our community of commercial brokers is rich with talent and experience, and I have no doubts that drawing on this deep pool of experts will keep our CIE on the cutting edge.  It was an honor to serve you, and even in these trying times I believe our future to be bright indeed."

Changing Your Quick Print Buttons

The CDX Quick Print buttons allow you to easily and quickly print your result set into one of your 3 favorite report formats. 

Follow the steps below to change which reports appear for your 3 Quick Print buttons: 
 

• From your CDX home page, select the My Preferences link under the Settings and Profile section. 
• When the My Preferences window pops up, scroll to the bottom
• From the Available Reports section, click on the report names you wish to have as one of your 3 Quick Print buttons and select "Add"
• From the Selected Reports section, click on the report names you no longer want and select "Remove".  You can now order your 3 reports by using the Up and Down buttons.  Once done click on "Save"

We have purchased this data on behalf of all our members and in recognition of the current economic challenges, we will provide every member access at no cost for the remainder of this year.

You now have access to the Demographic Data within a one (1), three (3) and five mile radius surrounding the selected property. The Demographics include information about the U.S. population, Population by Race, Households by Occupancy Type and Employment Numbers.

We are also introducing Thematic Mapping layers over our current maps. Thematic Mapping allows the user to view various "hat map layers" of different variables to aid in searching as well as post-searching analysis. Layers include: Parcel Boundary/APN, Unemployment Rates, Median Household Income, Median Housing Price, Unemployment Rate, Population by Block Group.

Designed to easily visualize the relationships between data and geography, users – gain new insights into their markets, share information-rich maps and graphs and improve strategic decision-making.

We believe this NEW FEATURE will provide each member the opportunity to analyze the data and in some cases compare it to other services that you may currently subscribe to.

Did you know that CIE offers FREE hands-on training?

Classes are held from 9:00 am - 11:30 am, at the CIE office. Registration is required as we are limited to the number of computers available. Three dynamic classes are available:

Basic: Searching Techniques, Selecting and Using the Various Reports, CDX Mail. Emphasis on Searching.

Advanced: Searching Techniques, Selecting and Using the Various Reports, Setting up User Preferences, CDX Mail. Emphasis on Agent/Client Tools.

Administrators: Searching Techniques, How to Add, Edit and Maintain Company Listings. Selecting and Using the Various Reports, CDX Mail, Email Listings, Uploading Photos and Flyers.
